The Do's and Don'ts of Your Skincare Routine
A Guide to Your Skin Care Routine... The Do's and Don'ts!
Knowing what to do and what not to do can be one of the most challenging parts about skin care! There are so many different products and tons of information out there that seem so important and relevant to your skin success! Here are our top dos and don'ts to your skin care routine!
DO consider your skin type
Knowing your skin type is critical to your skincare routine success! If you don’t know your skin type and use the wrong products it can have negative effects on your skin and can result in breakouts, inflammation, and imbalance. It is also important to note that your skin changes over time. It can fluctuate between seasons and during hormonal changes! Take for instance the temperature differences between summer and winter, this can definitely impact oily or dry skin changes. Another example is pre and post puberty skin changes!
DON'T ignore ingredients
Ingredient lists are not always the easiest labels to read and to understand, but it is critical to do your research! Some ingredients are unnecessary and even dangerous so it is important to always read labels and figure out what will benefit your skin! There are many great websites on the internet to help with this problem and let you search products or individual ingredients for more information. This can find out possible skin reactions, allergy risks, and other possible effects products can have on your skin. Did you know that even if a product claims it is natural or organic, those terms are not regulated and may only refer to one ingredient in the whole formula? Do your research because it’s worth it!
DO use SPF
Sunscreen is essential to your every day routine. There are many skin concerns that you may experience later on in life that could be avoided by wearing high-quality SPF in your younger years. Exposure to UV rays may cause burns and accelerate the signs of aging and increase your chances of developing skin cancer. Other skin concerns include wrinkles, dark spots, and pigmentation problems. Use a quality sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it every morning! It is also important to apply SPF even when you can’t see the sun! According to the SCF, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays penetrate the clouds, so make sure to apply rain or shine!
DO wash your makeup off
When you don't take your makeup off at the end of the day your makeup ends up sitting and soaking into your skin, which clogs your pores. This leads to many problems like breakouts! Make sure that you are double cleansing every day and that you are removing your makeup properly and consistently! It can be difficult to remember after a long day, but make it a part of your skincare routine and it will become standard practice to reach your skincare goals.
DON'T pick at your skin
This can be a hard habit to break, but picking at your face can be detrimental to your skin. It is hard to resist the temptation of a bump or a blackhead, but leave this to the professionals or just do not touch it at all! It is challenging to refrain from picking, but it's definitely not worth the damage to your skin which could cause scars or hyperpigmentation from improper extractions. On top of that, we should not touch our skin because of all the dirt and bacteria lurking on our hands. It’s not worth it and your skin will be better off without it!
DO drink lots of water
Water is the miracle drink. It helps us plump skin cells which reduces the look of wrinkles, along with flushing impurities and toxins out of our systems. Water keeps our face fresh and clean while reducing breakouts. The adult human body is 60% water so you could imagine that drinking water gives us tons of benefits! Along with flushing out toxins and preventing acne, drinking more water will give you that glowing skin look to complete your skin goals!
DON'T forget your neck
Don’t forget your neck (also known as your décoletté)! This is one of the areas that is often overlooked when it comes to your skincare routine. The skin on your décoletté area is different from the skin on your face. Your neck and chest areas have fewer sebaceous (fat and oil) glands underneath the skin than in our facial tissue, which means this area loses its elasticity more rapidly. The skin on our necks also becomes much more thin and fragile with time, which is why it is so important you do not forget this area of your body when it comes to skincare application!
DO give your skin time to reach your skin goals
Skin goals are all about patience! It can be frustrating when you do not see results overnight, but that's normal and okay! It takes a lot of patience to start seeing your skin reach your skincare goals, but it is definitely worth it! If you do the research and put in the time and effort, you will start to see results!
